After my daughter Christy was diagnosed with MS, we began an avalanche
of learning. Some of it was through reading, some through education
provided to us by the MS Society, and some through real life
experiences. Never having to deal with a handicap, we were not quite
prepared for some of the issues that we soon were facing. One of the
issues that certainly was not huge, but a constant thorn in our side,
was how we would be treated when parking in a handicapped spot, (with a
handicapped placard) or when Christy needed the assistance of a
handicapped cart while shopping.
At first we were shocked at
some of the experiences that we had. From there we moved onto some
humor...claiming that we were changing the world "One Wal-Mart at a
time" as we would speak to management when we would encounter a
negative experience. It was with one specific episode however, that I
finally became concerned enough and decided that we needed a
comfortable and yet educating way to help people understand that not
all illness is visible. We wanted a place for people to go and
hopefully understand a bit about not only MS, but other "invisible
illnesses". Thus - in the moment of concern, frustration, and
humor...the brainchild of Why Do I Park Here.com was born.
It is our hope that some will share their stories of situations where their illness created a situation where they were made to feel awkward. It is also our hope that others will read your stories so that they may have a better understanding of why it might be that your parked "there" today.
Thank you for visiting us!
